Learning the art of belly dancing might seem like an interesting thing, and it is, but many people do not realize the factors involved that also make it something that can be related to weight loss and a great form of exercise. The art of belly dancing is not simply dancing, it is an entire form of working out and a form of reaching a spiritual level for some that can completely enhance and change your life in ways that you never thought possible with a simple dance. For one, it is often commonly believed that belly dancers wear a jewel in their navels. This is not true and is a convention of Hollywood. Real dancers in the Middle East do not use a navel jewel because it has no significance to the art of belly dancing. It can, at times, distract from the actual artistic prevalence of the dance which would threaten the entire aspect of the importance of belly dancing.

One of the most commonly misunderstood notions about belly dancing is that it developed from a dance of seduction for Middle Eastern women to seduce the sultans of their time. The fact is that the art of belly dancing actually developed from an exercise that women used to do to prepare their muscles for the strains of going into labour.
